Why these problems happen in artificial turf surface?
From 2003, some PE teachers and students in Hefei Polytechnical University and Nanjing Normal University meet a few problems when you played on their artificial turf football fields-which were quite important to them because they used these artificial grass field almost everyday. Once of the problem is they found some ‘green hair’on the ground, which will adhere to their shoes, legs, collars and skins, Some even go to their mouth. Those bring some healthy problems of pruritus and cough. Those problems also happened in some other schools.
What is the real reason? Some experts pointed out that those schools and installers pay much atttention to the material of the artificial grass product itself but ignore artificial grass field is a whole system. Some factors such as sub-base construction, artificial turf product manufacture technology, synthetic grass coating will aslo play important roles to an artificial grass field besides artificial grass materials.
To let more schools and our customers know as much knowledge as possible about artificial grass surface system, here listed some problems that maybe happen in an synthetic turf pitch:
Problem One: color changed or fading after installing artificial grass for a few months or years.
Reasons maybe as following:
1. quality of the yarn/fiber do not reach the industry standard. For example, the additive of UV, anti-aging is not enough.
2. the composition of the artificial grass yarn and fiber is not reasonable. It contains too much bad quality additive.
3. the machines of artificla turf yarn were outdated, which will cause worse workmanship and unstable artificial turf yarns and synthetic grass fibers.
4. environment problems such as strong uv, acid rain and industrial pollution.
Problem Two: pilling and chalking to artificial grass fiber
Reasons maybe as following:
1. extremely frequently used. Fibrillated yarn will split to 50-60 ones 4-5 years later and worst 1-2 years later.
2. artificial grass yarn use polypropylene as main material. PP is harder, crisper and easier to pilling and chalking.
Problem Three: The artificial lawn becoming hairless.
Reasons maybe as following:
1. bad workmanship, or less quality backing, coating. Those will cause the backing hold the artificial grass yarn not so stroungly.
2. using less quality artificial grass fiber materials such as PP.
3. the infill of sands do not meet the standards. The artificial grass surface will be hurt if the sand is too large or not smooth.
Problem Four: backing broke
Reasons maybe as following:
1. the backing is too thin, commonly use pp material.
2. The quality of artificial turf coating material is not so good, or use too much coating materials.
3. sub-base is not flat which will hurt the backing of artificial turf.
4. The drainge system is not so good and the backing soak in the water for a long time.
Problem Five: Color seemed different in some parts of the artificial grass surface.
Reasons maybe as following:
1. made by less quality synthetic grass yarn. The stickness of the yarn is not same in every stitch, and the color is not stable which will cause the artificial grass field looks with different colors.
2. The infill of sand and rubber granules were not distributed well. It will cause the artificial grass field looks with different colors.
3. The sub-base is not flat which will cause the seam crossing has gaps.
4. Bad quality infill contaminates the artificial grass surface.
